Edgar Fight

A featherweight title rematch between Amanda Nunes and Cris Cyborg is potentially in the works for UFC 240.

Fresh off her first-round TKO victory over Holly Holm at UFC 239, double-champ Amanda Nunes may be making a quick return to the cage. Terez Owens is reporting a rumor that the UFC is targeting a featherweight rematch between Nunes and Cris Cyborg for UFC 240 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Shortly after the news of this potential fight broke, Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports reported on Twitter that, per Dana White, the rumor is untrue.

So … is White pulling one of his little white lies, or did Terez Owens jump the gun?

Currently, Cyborg is scheduled to meet former Invicta champion and one-time UFC veteran Felicia Spencer at the event. That fight is widely considered to be a number one contender fight, with the winner going on to face Nunes for the featherweight title.

A Nunes versus Cyborg rematch at UFC 240 could make plenty of sense. Cyborg has a single fight remaining on her UFC contract and has been vocal about her dissatisfaction with the UFC and her intention to test the waters of free agency. A Cyborg win over Spencer could leave the UFC in a difficult position with its number one contender looking to fight in a competing promotion. And with the state of the UFC’s paper-thin featherweight division, the promotion can not afford to lose another contender.

Nunes and Cyborg last fought at UFC 232 in December 2018. Nunes finished Cyborg with strikes in under one minute. Despite the quick result, many fans have been clamoring for a rematch, largely on the basis of Cyborg’s long track record as the baddest woman in the sport. Prior to the loss to Nunes, Cyborg had won 20 consecutive bouts dating back to 2005.

The rumor further reports that with Spencer bumped from UFC 240, she would next face the winner of the Pam Sorenson vs. Kaitlin Young Invicta FC title bout scheduled for August 9.

If Nunes were to fight Cyborg for the featherweight title at UFC 240, she would be the first UFC double champion to appear in title defenses at both weights in which she holds a title.
UFC 240 takes place on July 27, and would mean a 21-day turnaround for Nunes.
