England vs Switzerland: Predicted line-ups ahead of Nations League 2019 third place play-off, Gareth Southgate has confirmed he will make changes for England’s Nations League third place play-off against Switzerland on Sunday afternoon.
But at his pre-match press conference, the England manager was tight-lipped on the position of centre-back John Stones, who was at fault for two of the goals on Thursday evening.
Southgate said: “We’ll probably have to make some changes. We’ve got doubts over (Ben) Chilwell, (Marucs) Rashford, (Jordan) Henderson. There’s a few more to check. I don’t want to make wholesale changes.
“We lost an important game on Thursday. We’ve got thousands of fans here and we have to make sure our performance is one that gives them something back. Every time we take the field, we are learning. No England international is a practice match.”
Here’s everything you need to know about the match – including how the two teams are likely to line-up.
England: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Maguire, Rose; Dier, Delph, Barkley; Sterling, Lingard, Kane.
Switzerland: Sommer; Mbabu, Akanji, Schar, Ricardo Rodríguez; Freuler, Xhaka, Zakaria, Zuber; Shaqiri, Seferovic.
England played very well against the Netherlands before shooting themselves squarely in the foot with two horrific defensive mistakes.
However, injuries will make England’s task against Switzerland very difficult. For starters Rashford is a doubt, meaning Gareth Southgate will likely be forced into playing a clearly unfit Harry Kane.
Jordan Henderson is also a major doubt, as is Ben Chilwell, who made an impressive start to the game on Thursday night.
That said, England should have too much for Switzerland, who were underwhelming against Portugal and do not have a particularly impressive record against high-ranked opposition. It will be close – but England should squeeze past the Swiss.
